The Cause
Our goal is to give a percentage of our 2010 proceeds to the Boone based non profit organization, Appalachian Voices. Appalachian Voices is an award-winning, environmental organization committed to protecting the land, air and water of the central and southern Appalachian region and advancing a vision for a cleaner energy future. The organization was listed as one of E! Environmental Magazine's top 5 favorite ways to become environmentally active, and has been recognized as a Google Earth Hero for their work on iLoveMountains.org, a website dedicated to ending mountaintop removal coal mining. The organization is headquartered in Boone, with offices in Charlottesville, Virginia and Washington, D.C. For more information, visit AppVoices.org.
The Green Village
In addition to our cooperation with Appalachian Voices, the Green Village is a conglomerate of some of the most efficient and amazing non-profit organizations in the field of environmental and social awareness. Below is a list and links to those non-profits:
NC Green Power
Appalachian Voices
ASU Energy Center
High Country Conservancy
Dogwood Alliance
Habitat for Humanity
Shuttle and Carpooling - Though this idea is not new, we are offering a more efficient shuttle service to our festival participants. We want to encourage carpooling for two main reasons; safety and reduction of pollution due to mass individual transportation. Stay tuned for locations and times of our shuttles.
Green Practices
River Clean Up - In our second year of the River Clean Up, we hope to get even more trash out of the New River. We're linking back up with Appalachian State University's Sustainable Development Program and The National Committee for the New River to get the job done. Local creeks next to the fairgrounds run directly into the New River, considered by some to be one of the oldest rivers in the world. Keeping its tributaries clean is imperative to North Carolina and the Appalachian region. We will use a team of volunteers to pick up trash from the river, river bank, and surrounding area Friday, August 27th , 2010 from 12-2 PM. What better way to enjoy a beautiful fall day in Boone!
Solar Staging - Daisy, a portable solar and wind turbine generator donated by the Appalachian State Energy Center will be back in full force this year powering our third stage! Thank you Sun! Compostable Product Use - In 2009 we recycled a whopping 2,000 lbs of trash to the local composting facility of Boone. We require all of our vendors to serve on ONLY compostable materials.
Food Drive - We are teaming up with several Greek social organizations from Appalachian State University to host our second canned food drive benefitting the local Hunger Coalition, as well as encouraging our attendees to give financial donations. The fraternities and sororities at Appalachian State have always had effective and generous community activism and we are happy to bring the two together.
